The 2nd quarterly report on the evolution of the online gambling market corresponding to the period: April-June 2020 is published.
The GGR for the quarter was € 208.85 million, which implies a decline of -4.18% quarter over quarter and an increase of 17.71% year over year.
Regarding the rest of the main figures, deposits and withdrawals of the players, their variation rates decrease in relation to the previous quarter, -4.74% and -6.35% respectively. Marketing expenditure undergoes a strong drop of -65.65% quarter over quarter and new accounts experiences a fall both with respect to the same quarter of the previous year and with respect the previous quarter, with the detail shown in Table 1.
In the analysis of the GGR by game segments it is observed that:
The € 208.85 million of GGR are distributed among € 68.15 million in Betting (32.63%); € 5.05 million in Bingo (2.42%); € 93.54 million in Casino (44.79%); € 3.92 million in Contests (1.88%) and € 38.2 million in Poker (18.29%).
The betting segment has a decreasing rate of -38.38% quarter over quarter and -20.79% year over year. There is a fall of -34.90% in In-played sportsbook and -48.60% in pre-match with respect to the previous quarter. In this quarter horse betting and other betting have increased 51.89% and 46.05% respectively
Bingo has experienced an increase of 36.96% quarter over quarter and 66.89% year over year.
In the casino segment there has been a growth of 22.55% quarter over quarter and an annual variation rate of 36.48%. Live roulette and Slots are the games with strongest growth, 28.92% and 19.88%, respectively. In this quarter, it is observed that market share of casino is the highest, surpassing betting one (see Table 2).
The contests experienced a rise of 108.84% in this quarter and a growth of 733.02% in the annual variation rate. This segment exhibits an irregular behaviour with annual variation rates in the fourth quarter of -24.21% in 2017; -66.99% in 2018; -36.89% in 2019.
The poker presents an increase of 57.84% over the previous quarter and 97.35% year over year. The rise is in both poker cash and poker tournament, 56.12% and 58.70% quarter over quarter respectively. April is the month with the highest activity.
As a summary, the percentage distribution of the GGR for the different segments in this quarter of the period from 2017 to 2020 is shown in Table 2.
Marketing spending has been € 40.62 million in the last quarter, with a quarterly fall of -65.65% and broken down into € 6.66 million affiliation expenses; € 4.32 million sponsorship; promotions € 12.47; and advertising € 17.16 million. There has been a significant variation of -65.65% quarter over quarter, motivated by the increase of advertising (-71.19%) and promotions (-70.55%). In this quarter, promotions are broken down into redeemed promotions included in prizes and redeemed promotions not included in prizes.
The monthly average of active game accounts is 642,938, which implies a drop of -29.4% quarter over quarter and -25.35% year over year. The monthly average of the new game accounts is 137,930, with an annual fall of -41-02% and -53.15% quarter over quarter.

The activity for the second quarter has been affected by the declaration of State of Alarm due to COVID-19 by Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14th, and subsequently, by the wide restrictions in advertisement and promotions of gambling, from April 4th to June 10th, established in the article 27 of the Royal Decree Law 11/2020, of March 31th, adopting additional urgent measures in the areas of employment and economics to deal with the COVID-19 crisis[1].
This exceptional situation caused by the pandemic lead to the closing of the main sports competitions, both national and international. Closing and resuming dates of some sports competitions are shown in the following table.

“Artículo 37. Medidas de restricción a las comunicaciones comerciales de las entidades que realicen una actividad de juego regulada en la Ley 13/2011, de 27 de mayo, de regulación del juego.
1. Las medidas previstas en este artículo se aplican a todas las entidades que desarrollen una actividad de juego incluida en el ámbito de aplicación de la Ley 13/2011, de 27 de mayo, de regulación del juego.
2. A efectos de lo previsto en este artículo, se entiende por comunicaciones comerciales cualquier forma de actividad publicitaria difundida por cualquier medio o soporte, destinada a promocionar, de manera directa o indirecta, las actividades de juego definidas en el ámbito de aplicación de la Ley 13/2011, de 27 de mayo, o las entidades que las realizan.
3. Se prohíben las comunicaciones comerciales que, de forma implícita o expresa, hagan referencia a la situación de excepcionalidad que deriva de la enfermedad COVID-19 o interpelen al consumo de actividades de juego en este contexto.
4. Durante el tiempo de vigencia de la declaración del estado de alarma realizada por el Real Decreto 463/2020, de 14 de marzo, las entidades referidas en el apartado 1 no podrán realizar las siguientes actuaciones:
a) Actividades de promoción dirigidas a la captación de nuevos clientes o de fidelización de clientes existentes que recojan cuantías económicas, bonos, bonificaciones, descuentos, regalos de apuestas o partidas, multiplicadores de cuotas o premios o cualquier otro mecanismo similar.
b) Emisión de comunicaciones comerciales en los servicios de comunicación audiovisual referidos en el artículo 2.2 de la Ley 7/2010, de 31 de marzo, General de la Comunicación Audiovisual, incluidos los servicios a petición cuando aquellas sean distinguibles y separables, excepto en la franja horaria comprendida entre la 1 y las 5 de la mañana.
c) Emisión de comunicaciones comerciales que se comercialicen, vendan u organicen por prestadores de servicios de intercambio de vídeos a través de plataformas definidos como tales en la Directiva (UE) 2018/1808 del Parlamento Europeo y del Consejo, de 14 de noviembre de 2018, por la que se modifica la Directiva 2010/13/UE sobre la coordinación de determinadas disposiciones legales, reglamentarias y administrativas de los Estados miembros relativas a la prestación de servicios de comunicación audiovisual, excepto en la franja horaria comprendida entre la 1 y las 5 de la mañana.
d) Emisión de comunicaciones comerciales en servicios de la sociedad de la información (incluidas comunicaciones individualizadas en correos electrónicos o medios equivalentes y redes sociales).»
5. El incumplimiento de cualquiera de las obligaciones establecidas en este artículo tendrá la consideración de infracción grave a los efectos de lo dispuesto la Ley 13/2011, de 27 de mayo, de regulación del juego.”
